Week Four

Visit from Constable Nikki

As part of Road Safety week we were very lucky to have Constable Nikki come into our classroom to talk about ways that we could keep safe.  We identified things that we are concerned about when we walk to school and we had a discussion about how we could address those issues and keep safe.

Super Writing

Every week we do a writing warm up called Super Writing, which is where someone in our class chooses a topic which we write about for 4 minutes.  Every minute is timed and we count the number of words we write and proofread our writing.  We then get the opportunity to share our writing in groups of four and if we want to share our writing with the class, we can do that too.  In this particular writing session we had over 15 students who wanted to share their writing. That's a record in our class! We are beginning to realise how important it is to share our writing with others so that we build up our own confidence and so that our peers can hear good examples to help them with their own writing. Well done Rising Stars!

Singing Practice

On Thursday we joined up with Room 20's Top Dogs to practise singing some of the songs for Samoan Language week.  Thank you Mrs Rao for having us in your room and going through the songs with us to make sure we know them.

We also had a Samoan singing practise with our buddy class the Kung Fu Pandas and the Magnificent Minions.  Well done Apoua and Harrieta for going through some of the words to help us with the correct pronunciation.

Homework Stars

Well done to all the Rising Stars that completed their animal study homework task for Week 3 and their space study for Week 4. You did an amazing job finding information and facts on your topics and it's great to see many of you also focussing on your presentation and presenting your work to a high standard. Keep up the amazing effort!

Week Three

3 Way Conferences

Thank you to all parents and students who attended our 3 way conferences this week.  It was really great getting to meet with you and having the opportunity to discuss your child's learning goals and how we will achieve these goals together.

The Rising Stars also shared with their parents some of their highlights from Term One.
Here are a few of the highlights we talked about:

"Hosting our school assembly was a highlight because it was nice getting good comments and building up our confidence on stage in front of a big audience." Margaret

"Being a peer mediator because I have learnt how to be responsible and I have enjoyed doing my duties." Harrieta

"I have enjoyed being a road patrol monitor because I like to help the children cross the road safetly  so they don't get hurt". Ana

"I liked spending time with our buddy class because I liked to play with them and do different learning activities." Greta

"Becoming a leader because I like taking responsibility and having the opportunity to be a role model to others."  Anahera

"Swimming because I like learning life skills so I know how to swim and be safe in the water." Dantae

"Maths because I was in the blue maths group but now I'm in the yellow maths group and I can do harder work." Gabriel

"I liked doing fitness because it's good for us and it's a great start to the day for our learning." Sasha

Explanation Writing

In Writing the Sharks and Whales groups looked at another explanation example which was about tadpoles and identified the structure within the text and highlighted the language features they noticed.  Once they had looked at this example and discussed it, then it was time to go about writing their own explanation on a certain topic. The topic they decided to focus on was "How paper is recycled." Before they began though, they knew they needed to create a plan and do a bit of research on their topic. Here are some of our pics.....

Homework

Well done to all the Rising Stars who completed their homework task from Week 2.  The task was to complete a small research study on New Zealand and present the information either in their books or as a poster. Check out Apoua's poster that he completed for his homework. Tino pai to mahi Apoua!

Week Two

3 Way Conferences

This week The Rising Stars have been super busy setting our learning goals and thinking about what we need to do to achieve them in preparation for our 3 way conferences next week. We are looking forward to seeing all parents and children on Tuesday 17th of May and Wednesday 18th of May at your booked time slots to discuss these goals.

Writing

In Writing we have been learning about explanations and their purpose and structure. We looked at an example of explanation writing which was called- How is food digested - which helped us to identify the different parts of an effective explanation. The purpose of an explanation is to explain how or why something happens. We also learnt that an explanation has the following things in the structure of how it is written....

1. Title: This is a short statement about the topic.
2. Definition: Defines the thing or process.
3. Description: Describes the parts or elements to the process.
4. Process: How the thing or process works.
5. Application: Application of the object, machine and process.

Reading

During Reading this week two groups had the opportunity to perform their group plays in front of the class and they did an amazing job. Sometimes getting up in front of other students and performing can be really nerve wracking.....but I was extremely proud of them all for getting up and giving it a go.

Rippa Rugby session

On Friday we were super lucky to have our first Rippa Rugby session with T-Rex from Counties Manukau.  He introduced us to some of the basic skills involved in playing the game and we had the opportunity to also practise some useful strategies to help us when we work with our team to score a try.  It was a lot of fun and some of the Rising Stars had a chance to showcase their singing skills throughout the session too.
